august capsule wardrobe: the best transitional pieces

fleurdille august capsule wardrobe

Are you sold on capsule wardrobes yet?

For the past couple of months, I’ve been honing down my wardrobe and really focusing on a few key pieces that I can wear multiple ways and more than one time. I’m sure my industry affected my mindset, but I fell into the trap of fast fashion and found that I simply wasn’t wearing all of the clothes in my closet.

Sure, there are pieces you purchase that are unique to an event – like a wedding – that you may only wear once or twice. However, I found myself cycling through outfits quickly, selling items on poshmark frequently, and it just wasn’t that life giving. Maybe it was quarantine or something as simple as a shift in priorities, but focusing on a few key pieces has been so much more life giving.

Honestly, I’ve found that spending money on pieces I can wear all season long has been so life giving. For one, it’s freed up time I used to spend shopping. Two, it’s really helped me hone in on my personal style – something I’ve been a huge fan of for a long time.

August Capsule Wardrobe:

If you’ve been following along for some time, then you’ll notice a lot of the pieces in my August capsule wardrobe are pulled from the June capsule and the July capsule. These are pieces I’ve worn all summer long and still hold their “value” right now. They’re super versatile and honestly work any month of the summer. Pieces like a white maxi dress or cutoff denim shorts.

I know a lot of us need some pieces that are work appropriate, too. Whether you’re a teacher heading back to work or you’re starting to work more in your office setting, it’s essential to have pieces that are work appropriate. So, for this month’s capsule wardrobe I included some good layering pieces like my favorite sweater blazer and a white blazer. I also kept work-appropriate pieces like my favorite jumpsuit.

Dresses/Jumpsuits:

WHITE HALTER MAXI DRESS – maxi dresses are so fun in summer and I loved the look of this halter maxi dress. While this item is one of the few pieces in this capsule that is over $50, I think it it well worth your money. The quality is great and this is a dress you’ll be able to wear summer after summer. It’s double lined so it’s not see through and it lends so many outfit options.

BLACK JUMPSUIT – this jumpsuit may be the piece I am most excited about in this month’s wardrobe. The go-weave material is amazing and hardly wrinkles. The black dress from June’s capsule was made of the same material. This jumpsuit was a new release for Everlane this summer and I grabbed it immediately. I think it is truly one of the most versatile pieces. You can wear it now as is, layer a top or a summer sweater over it, and then in the Fall you can pair it with a blazer or a leather jacket.

WHITE T-SHIRT DRESS – this dress is such an affordable and comfortable dress. Although it’s white, it’s thick enough that it’s not see through. I also like that the length is business casual-appropriate and can be worn into September. Simply pair it with a denim jacket or tie a denim short around your waist and you’re ready for cooler temps.

Tops:

WHITE POPOVER SHIRT – I’m not a big button-down top kind of gal, but I think the look of a white button down top is just classic. This popover shirt gives the illusion of a white button down top without actually having any buttons. The v-neck is super flattering and I love the oversized fit (I stayed TTS). It’s a great top to wear with shorts or to layer over a dress or jumpsuit.

SQUARE NECK TANK TOP (BLACK & WHITE) – I just got these tanks in and I love how well these ribbed tanks fit. They are so flattering I ended up getting them in black and white. I love them for summer because they are right on trend with the square neck and they go with almost anything. These tanks will also be pieces you can layer over in the fall.

SWEATER TANK – I absolutely love the sweater tank trend for summer and had to include one. I included this one which has the cutest ruffle straps, but I also love this v-neck sweater tank and this one.

TAN SWEATER BLAZER – this blazer was a staple last fall/winter/spring and I have no doubt it will be this year, too. The color is a great neutral and pairs well with almost anything. NOTE: size down 1 or 2 sizes.

WHITE BLAZER – a white blazer is a great option to layer with if you’re returning to work. It screams summer and sophistication all at the same time.

LINEN-LIKE BUTTON DOWN TOP – since it’s still summer, we can get away with some great summer fabrics like linen. I think this top is just so incredibly versatile. You can wear it with cutoffs, with jeans, or as a swimsuit coverup.

BLACK VNECK TANK – I’ve been wearing this black tank since early spring and I have every intention on wearing it throughout the rest of the year. It’s great on it’s own and easy to layer over. It’s super soft, very comfortable, and the vneck is super flattering.

SUMMER SWEATER TANK – this summer sweater tank is a great neutral summer sweater and a great tank to wear in the summer and fall.

Bottoms:

WHITE JEANS – because it’s still full blown summer, it felt natural to include these white skinny jeans in this month’s capsule again. Although I have several pairs of white jeans, this pair is by far and away my favorite. For one, it’s under $90. Secondly, it has a bit of stretch to it, so they fit really well If you’re wanting some flattering jeans that are also comfortable, grab these!

CUTOFF DENIM SHORTS – y’all, I’m telling you if you haven’t already purchased these denim shorts, you need to ASAP. They were in my June capsule and they are definitely worth having in July’s capsule wardrobe, too. They fit so, so well. Honestly, with every wear they fit better and get a little bit softer. As far as sizing goes, I recommend staying with your true size if you want a slightly looser fit. When I sized down one, the waist fit perfectly, but it made the length super short. I found when I stayed true to size they fit much better.

WHITE DENIM SHORTS – because it’s heating up down here in Dallas I had to add another pair of shorts to the mix. I added these high-waisted white denim shorts from Madewell that are a tried and true pair for me. I got them last summer and they fit so well. They are a great length and you can wear them cuffed or uncuffed if you want a bit more length.

BLACK BIKER SHORTS – biker shorts are super trendy right now and I’m telling you, I’m here for it. They are so versatile in a wardrobe. You can wear them to workout in or you can dress them up with a summer sweater or cute tank top and some white sneakers. The pair I included in this month’s capsule wardrobe is super affordable and was rated extremely well!

Accessories:

STRAW FEDORA – straw fedoras are my jam. They are great to wear to the pool, to hide greasy hair and to style for date night. This brand will forever be my favorite brand for straw fedoras and this fedora has been my newest summer hat addition. It’s the perfect neutral hat.

MINI STRAW TOTE BAG – this is one of the most “summer” pieces in my capsule and I love it. This straw tote is a perfect tote to wear all summer long. It’s a classic shape and will work summer after summer!

AVIATOR SUNGLASSES – these Karen Walker sunglasses will always be my tried and true sunnies, but I tend to opt for something cheaper in the summer. I figure if I wear cheaper sunglasses in the summer then I won’t feel as bad if I lose them or my girls knock them off me and they brake. This two-pack of aviator sunglasses are crazy affordable, very comfortable, and work so well!

BLACK SANDALS – I mean how cute are these under $20 sandals?

LAYERED NECKLACE – layered necklaces are my jam right now. Currently I’ve been wearing this paperclip chain necklace with this amazon necklace over it. I love how dainty the chains are and how perfect they pair together.

FAUX LEATHER CLASSIC TOTE – in addition to a cute summer purse, I’ll be carrying a work bag this month too as I head back to school. I love that this classic tote (which is crazy affordable) can work as a work bag, a carry-on travel bag, or a purse!
