Happy Tuesday, loves! It’s officially vest season! Anyone else as excited as I am? As soon as Fall hits I feel like my weekend uniforms switch from sun dresses and denim shorts to vests and chunky knits. Vests are just so dang easy to style and so super cute! I wasn’t always a vest lover though. In fact, I avoided vests for a long time as I thought they made me look chunkier. I’m 5’2″ with a bust and some of those big puffy vests just don’t do the trick for me. So the past couple of years I’ve been on a mission on how to style a vest (because I really do love them) in a way that flatters my figure.
When styling a vest, I look for a couple of different things. First I make sure that it’s not too puffy. Typically I’m wearing a vest for style just as much as for warmth. I mean I live in Dallas, not Chicago, so we don’t really have to dress strictly for winter survival purposes like up north. Then I make sure the vest fits right. By “fits right” I mean it lays nicely. For me that usually means sizing down because I want the back of the vest to lay flat against my back and not gape. I also want the front to lay nicely and not hang down too far. Then I opt to layer it over a piece that is form fitting and true to my personal style. Sometimes that means layering it over a dress, sometimes over a bodysuit, and sometimes over a sweater.
For today’s look I layered it over a thin, feminine blouse. Because this blouse was a little flowy and long however, I tucked it in the front to show my waistline. This helps you retain your figure and not drown under the bulk of your vest. My go-to for what to layer a vest over though is a form-fitting shirt. This year I have actually fallen in love with bodysuits to layer with because of the way they stay snug to your body.
Every year I add a vest or two to my wardrobe and this year I’ve already added two! This pink one in today’s post is super thin, very flattering, and covers your bum. I also got this leopard vest on sale and love how flattering it is. Next up on my “wish list” is this faux fur vest under $100. So, if you’re looking to add a vest or two to your wardrobe, check out my roundup below!
