Good morning! Today’s post is all about how to build on and add trendy items to things you already have in your wardrobe. Being on trend does not mean that everything you are wearing has to be new. Chances are, there are probably more items in your closet that are “on trend” than you realize.
Before we talk about how to add trendy pieces to your wardrobe without breaking the bank, let’s talk wardrobe staples. There are several items that are worth spending more on because they will never go out of style. Elle writes a great article on their 10 Closet Essentials, InStyle has their 10 Wardrobe Essentials, and Who What Wear has 14 Timeless Pieces You Shouldn’t Live Without. All are very similar, and I’ve also listed my staples below.
Anna’s 10 Wardrobe Staples:
white shirt (button down or a tee)
nude shoe (pumps specifically)
leather jacket
neutral colored tote (brown, black, or nude)
skinny jeans
black pumps
pencil skirt
wrap dress
a neutral watch (gold, nude, brown, or black)
black pants/leggings
Once you have your wardrobe staples down, it’s really easy to use those items as the base of your look and then add trendy pieces to them in the form of a shoe, a bag, a jacket, a scarf, or a top. Since you already have your classics, look for trendier items at stores that produce well-made clothing at a reasonable price – places such as H&M. Save yourself a little money and spend less on trendy items because you won’t be wearing them for very long.
Pairing some trendier items with pieces that are nicer will also elevate the quality of your trendier pieces, too. So for today’s outfit I already had flats, a black tote, and leggings from a couple seasons ago and created a trendier look simply by adding a tweed blazer from H&M.
I’d love to hear what your wardrobe staples are in the comments below!!
