Can I get a show of hands for those that can get to day 5 hair? For so long I could only get to day 2 or 3, but can proudly say that I can get to day 5 without washing! Not only that, but I’ve finally learned a couple secrets to not only get to day 5, but to have hair I can style well!

Secrets to Day 5 Hair:

START WITH A HAIR MASK

Although this post is mainly about care after you’ve showered, it’s important to take good care of you hair pre-dry shampoo! Once a week, typically Sunday night, I will put a conditioning mask on my hair to strengthen it and reduce breakage. My favorites are the Olaplex No. 3 Hair Protector and the Kerastase Hair Mask for Damaged Hair.

PICK A QUALITY DRY SHAMPOO

Picking a quality dry shampoo is essential to achieve good 5 day hair. It’s a hard one because it seems silly to spend a little more on something like dry shampoo, but let me tell you, it makes a massive difference. Here’s why: when you use a quality dry shampoo, the ingredients are better for your hair. Ultimately, the better the ingredients the more natural your hair will feel.

There are simply some dry shampoos that make your hair feel grimy day one of using them. If I’m going to try to get to day 5, I want my hair to feel as soft as when I stepped out of the shower. I don’t want to feel like I need a rake to brush through my hair.

DRY SHAMPOO IN THE PM, TOUCH UP IN THE AM

This tip has been a total game changer for me! Several of my friends let me know I was doing the whole dry shampoo thing all wrong by using it in the morning. They told me to put it on the night before and sleep on it. If you have long hair, spray it on the night before and then throw it up in a top knot. For us short hair gals, simply spray it on the night before and then go to bed with your hair down.

What I’ve found by doing it this way is that the dry shampoo soaks up all your hair oil over night. Then when you wake up all you have to do is spray to touch up. It’s a total game changer! I actually use less dry shampoo this way!

USE YOUR DRY SHAMPOO EVERYWHERE

This was another game-changing tip for me. Instead of just spraying dry shampoo along my part and around my face, spray it all throughout your hair. Spray it on the back, the bottom, and the sides. Then use your fingers to rub it all in.

DRY SHAMPOO BEFORE WORKING OUT

This is a newer tip for me, but it seems to be pretty effective. If you sweat a lot when you workout, spray on dry shampoo prior to your workout. Much like sleep, this allows the excess oil to be absorbed by the dry shampoo.

My Favorite Dry Shampoos (in order):

  1. Living Proof Advanced Clean Dry Shampoo($30) – this is the cleanest feeling dry shampoo I’ve used to date. It’s very similar to the one below, but slightly less grimy.
  2. Living Proof Dry Shampoo ($26) – this has been one of my favorites for awhile. It smells great, too!
  3. Trader Joe’s Dry Shampoo ($5) – I gave this a whirl this summer and y’all, it’s legit good! It’s a smaller bottle so I usually travel with this one!
  4. Kristin Ess Dry Shampoo ($14) – this is a great, more affordable dry shampoo option!
  5. Stranded Dry Shampoo ($26) – if you’re looking for a “clean” dry shampoo, I recommend this one!
